New Year and 2025 reflection

Happy New Year, everyone!

2025. lol! lmao, even.

On one hand, 80% of my energy was poured into caring for my traumatized dog, wrestling with the agony of re-homing him and aching from missing him in my life, lots of great coworkers had to leave due to the declining quality of our workplace, and I don't rather not think about the trainwreck that was the US political landscape over the year.

On the other hand...I did things I never thought I'd ever do in my lifetime.

Anyway, closed last year out on a high note despite the state of everything, and I'm looking forward to this year because my partner is moving to my state this month. We'll be two hours away from each other and I'm so excited (crazy enough: she's moving to the area I lived in a decade ago.)

Have seen my little guy off to his new parent. She’s a nice older woman who works from home and lives with her retired husband. She has a giant yard for him to frolic in to his heart’s content and a bunch of grandkids for him to visit. Leo seemed to have taken to her immediately. I’m happy that my little guy seems to have found the perfect home. I've even been told I can come visit him.

That said, I suspect I’ll be Going Through It for a while.

State of dogfatherhood

It's been nearly a year since I adopted Leo, and what a year it's been. One tumultuous, rollercoaster of a year filled with highs, lows, and sudden swerves.

Leo is a sweet dog full of character. In a lot of ways he's the ideal dog--well-behaved, patient, clean, bright, quick to learn. I love him dearly.

I wish I could say I was alluding to good news with this, and while it's not "bad" news, it's not the place I'd like for us to have ended up at, either.

I've talked with his adoption coordinator and we've made plans to have him re-homed, though when this will be is uncertain. I initially planned on being his foster parent, but I'm at the point where I may have to turn him over to someone else to care for him.

This wasn't an easy decision on my part. In fact, it's one I've been rotating in my head since at least March, when his problems were becoming most prevalent. I'd been determined to exhaust all my options, and while I wouldn't say I'm out of options, the reality is that I don't have the energy to see them through any longer. The sensation of relief at the idea of him getting a new home has now outweighed the sensation of wanting to keep him any longer.

It's not goodbye, not yet, but it will be.

I just had a call with my former manager (one of my coworkers who was closest to Leo, has borne witness to his highs and lows, and has been nothing short of a godsend in helping me out with him) and I'm finally feeling at peace. She was supportive and understanding of my decision, which is exactly what I needed to hear. We're both hopeful my little guy is going to find his home.
